Yesterday, 22nd July, saw a small fire break out on board Royal Caribbean International's Freedom of the Seas whilst berthed in Falmouth, Jamaica.
The small mechanical fire was brought under control and extinguished fairly quickly and as a result the ship is fully operational. One crew member was however taken to hospital with first degree burns but no passengers were injured.
The fire broke out at around 9.15 and the fire suppression systems immediately operated. Passengers were then required to attend their muster stations. This was a precautionary measure but they were released once the situation was brought under control.
Dramatic photos on the internet have emerged of smoke bellowing from the fire around the funnel before the fire was extinguished, Passengers were then able to disembark the ship for shore excursions in Falmouth around 1pm.
Royal Caribbean on their corporate twitter account confirmed that they would be continuing their cruise and no current future itinerary changes were anticipated. However, the US Coastguard will inspect the ship when she re-enters US waters at the end of her cruise.
