Although Dundee is perched on the Tay Estuary and is accessible to Northern European countries such as Norway, the city has never really taken off a port of call for cruise ships.
There have been cruise ship visits in the past to the City of Discovery, famous for Jute, Jam and Journalism, but only for the smaller ships as the channel in the Tay is fairly shallow and larger cruise ships cannot berth at the city's docks.
This year however so a bold move by Cruise and Maritime for them to operate turnaround cruises on
Magellan for three sailings in March/April, passengers were able to embark on their cruise in Dundee and enjoy 7 nights to the Norwegian Fjords. At over 46,000grt and a length of 726 feet, she is the largest cruise ship ever to berth in the city. However, since the three Magellan cruises, there has only been a further 3 cruise ships visit the port, Silver Whisper, Star Legend and Island Sky.
2016 however looks a bit brighter for the Scottish city. Cruise and Maritime are bringing Magellan back to Dundee to operate cruises out of the port and these will be in April and May. June will see Princess Cruises bring their smallest ship, Pacific Princess to the city. July will see Fred Olsen's Braemar return to the city whilst Silver Wind and Windsurf will arrive in the port in August.
Dundee was once a thriving industrial city where shipbuilding and whaling were prevalent. Robert Falcon Scott's ship, Discovery was built in Dundee. Dundee is also credited with producing jute for the British Empire and also Dundee Marmalade. Comic icons such as the Dandy and the Beano were both produced in the city under the guidance of DC Thomson along with the famous Oor Willie and The Broons annuals too.
Currently, the city of Dundee is undergoing a regeneration program of the waterfront at a cost of over £1b which will include the establishment of Scotland's first V&A Museum.
